On Saturday, May 15, 2021, beginning at 9 a.m., the Mayors of the City of Portage and the City of Kalamazoo will lead a 10-mile bike ride to commemorate Kalamazoo Bike Week. Kalamazoo Bike Week runs from May 8 – 15, 2021. The Mayor’s (Bicycle) Ride, originally scheduled on May 8, 2021, has been rescheduled for May 15 due to the possibility of inclement weather.

Kalamazoo, MI -- April 30, 2021The 10th Annual Kalamazoo Area Bike Week--featuring events and activities throughout the week--kicks off Sat. May 8 and wraps up Sat., May 15.

Warmer weather and the urge to stay active during COVID are encouraging more bicycle riding than ever--including many families and children.  Cautious use of public transit is motivating others to use their bikes for basic transportation.  Many cyclists are riding the roads as a way to stay healthy, maintain fitness and train for what promises to be a better season for bike tours and competitive events.


Portage Road to close for I-94 bridge demolition

Fast facts:

- Portage Road will closed and detoured at I-94 for bridge demolition from Friday, April 30, to Monday, May 3.

- MDOT is widening 2.7 miles of I-94 from four to six lanes between Lovers Lane and Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo.

- The two-year project is an $87 million investment connecting several I-94 expansion projects from west of US-131 to Sprinkle Road completed since 2008.


April 27, 2021 -- The next step in the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) project to widen I-94 from four to six lanes from Lovers Lane to Sprinkle Road in Kalamazoo is demolishing the eastbound I-94 bridge over Portage Road.

Portage Road will be closed at I-94 and detoured on Kilgore Road and Kilgore Service Drive from 8 p.m. Friday, April 30, through 6 a.m. Monday, May 3. This work is weather dependent.

             MDOT is investing $87 million to widen 2.7 miles of I-94 and rebuild the Portage Road interchange with a new alignment known as a single-point urban interchange (SPUI), similar to the I-94/Westnedge Avenue interchange. The project also includes rebuilding four bridges and one culvert, traffic signal upgrades, new signs, freeway lighting, and noise barrier installation.

Progress past two weeks:


  • Both north and south 28th Street is constructed/graded/base coarse/paved.  Ditches are 95% complete.  Old 28th has been removed.


  • Hoffman prepping for WM at G Ave. Friday adjusting WM.  City is on notice.  City has to adjust valve and make sure it operates so Hoffman can adjust. 


Update for the next two weeks: 

28th Street:

Complete HMA Paving, restoration, permanent signs and pavement markings.

M-343 at 28th Street:

Complete widening and Paving

Between G Ave and 27th Street:

April 22 and 23 contractor will be lowering the water main. Consumers Gas lowering high pressure gas next week.

Five year transportation plan

The Michigan Department of Transportation released its latest five-year transportation plan on Thursday, outlining which projects are now on tap after the State Transportation Commission authorized an additional $3.5 billion in bonding to do more projects at Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's direction.
