KALAMAZOO, MI— The Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department is reminding residents of the cancer risk from radon during National Radon Awareness Month.
Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers, causing more than 20,000 deaths annually in the United States. Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that is naturally released from rock and soil. Radon gas can enter homes through the foundation resulting in an increased risk of exposure to radon radiation.

Kalamazoo, MI – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) notified the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department (KCHCS) that the Omicron variant has been identified in six Kalamazoo County residents.

2022 Dog Licenses Available

  • Michigan State Law requires all dogs to be rabies vaccinated and licensed at four (4) months of age.
  • Dogs must be licensed within 30 days of obtaining ownership or within 30 days of the dog turning 4 months of age.
  • Kalamazoo County license tags are sold to Kalamazoo County residents only.
  • Kalamazoo County licenses must be renewed yearly between December 1st and March 1st, regardless of when the previous year's license was purchased.
  • During the yearly renewal period (12/1 - 3/1), city/township offices, the Kalamazoo County Treasurer and most area veterinary offices sell dog licenses.
  • Licenses must be purchased directly from Animal Services after March 1st, or if a citation was issued.
  • Proof of current rabies vaccination is required to purchase a dog license.
  • After a dog is over 1 year of age, proof of spay or neuter is required to purchase a license at the altered rate.
  • Licenses are not transferable to another dog.

Grant program can help struggling residents this winter

Grant resources are available to help struggling residents keep the heat on and pay utility bills this winter. Some $54.5 million in Michigan Energy Assistance Program grants is available to cover full or partial payment of one or more bills for electric, natural gas, propane, heating oil or any other deliverable fuel used to provide heat. Residents in need can call 211 or visit www.mi211.org to learn about agencies that may assist with energy bills.
