Kalamazoo Area Building Authority (KABA) was created and established as a joint Construction Code Authority, and is a separate legal entity governed by an Authority Board established under Section 7 of the Urban Cooperation Act. Currently KABA regulates and controls building construction within Comstock Township, Kalamazoo Township, City of Parchment, Pine Grove Township, and Richland Township, and has the power to administer and enforce the State Construction Code within the boundaries of each such unit.

KABA is managed by a Board consisting of one elected representative from each of its jurisdictions and one member-at-large.

The staff and Board members are committed to ensuring the safety of citizens by enforcing the Michigan Construction Codes while providing expedient turnaround from permit application submittal to the final inspection.

Where to Obtain Permits

Building Permits - Building permits are issued through KABA.  Building permits cover the construction of the building itself. Once the permit has been issued by the inspector, work may commence.  Inspections sill be conducted throughout the project. (Note: Separate applications and permits must be pulled for electrical, mechanical, and plumbing work being done.)

Plumbing Permits – Plumbing permits are issued through KABA. Plumbing work shall not be started until the application for permit has been filed with KABA. All installations shall be in conformance with the Michigan Plumbing Code. No work shall be concealed until it has been inspected. When ready for an inspection, call KABA providing as much advance notice as possible.

Mechanical Permits - Mechanical permits are issued through KABA.  Mechanical work shall not be started until the application for permit has been filed with KABA. All installations shall be in conformance with the Michigan Mechanical Code. No work shall be concealed until it has been inspected. When ready for inspection, call KABA providing as much advance notice as possible.

Electrical Permits - Electrical permits are issued through KABA.  Electrical work shall not be started until the application for permit has been filed with KABA. All installations shall be in conformance with the Michigan Electrical Code. No work shall be concealed until it has been inspected. When ready for inspection, call KABA providing as much advance notice as possible.

Demolition Permits - Demolition permits are issued through KABA.  Please contact KABA to obtain a permit prior to any demolition.

Driveway Permits - Driveway permits are issued through the Road Commission Kalamazoo County, 3801 E. Kilgore Avenue, 269-381-3171 (except parcels off m89 and m43 who are governed by MDOT).  A driveway permit is required when new construction begins on a vacant parcel.  The permit is issued through the specified agency to ensure that the access onto the road is in a safe location.

Well and Septic Permits - Well and Septic (Private Utilities) permits are issued through the Kalamazoo County Environmental Health Department, 3299 Gull Road, 269-373-5210.  The purpose of obtaining a permit is to oversee the installation of these utilities for safety and environmental health.
